STEAM Club: Galentine’s Day Celebration of Sisterhood and Science

On Saturday, February 15th, 2025, the Girls Inc. Marietta Center hosted a memorable edition of STEAM Club for girls in kindergarten through eighth grade. This special Galentine’s Day celebration offered a fun blend of creativity and science as the girls came together to craft personalized gifts for their friends. The event integrated science, technology, engineering, arts, and math with emotional wellness, encouraging kindness and gratitude. Participants enjoyed hands-on activities, such as crafting marbled cards with shaving cream and food coloring, creating candy rainbows, designing 3D “printed” paintings, and making flip books with messages or animated images for their friends—all while celebrating the bonds of sisterhood.

One of the favorite activities was making candy rainbows. By dissolving the colored coating of fruit candies in water, the girls created stunning rainbow patterns. As the dye spread across the plate, they learned about diffusion, observing how the sugar in the candy coating slowed the spread of color. This simple but fascinating science experiment demonstrated the unique properties of molecules, sparking curiosity and wonder.

Another highlight was creating marbled cards with shaving cream, where the girls discovered how the soap’s hydrophilic properties caused the food coloring to form vibrant, distinct patterns. When the paper was pressed onto the shaving cream, the dye transferred beautifully, creating unique marbled designs.

The event also featured the creative exploration of 3D “printing” with sand and glue, which sparked even more curiosity among the girls. One participant’s curiosity led her to combine shaving cream, sand, and glue, resulting in a unique sensory experience that added an unexpected twist to the project (though we do not recommend attempting to replicate these results at home).

Throughout the day, girls were encouraged to express themselves through art and science, forming lasting friendships and embracing the spirit of sisterhood. By combining STEAM activities with a focus on kindness and collaboration, Girls Inc. empowered the girls to support each other, foster creativity, and build connections through the shared joy of crafting and learning.
